Why Choose EMDR Intensives vs. Weekly Therapy?

Feel better, faster

Whether you've experienced a recent trauma or been living with chronic symptoms for years, you want relief today. If you're a busy parent or have a demanding job, weekly therapy may be too much. EMDR intensives is an effective, accelerated approach that brings you peace now and allows you to get back to your life.

Deeper, focused healing

In weekly, 50 minute sessions, you have just enough time to settle in, talk about your week and maybe get into 20 minutes of trauma processing. The retreat-like, intensive approach, provides the environment and the space to go deeperinto reprocessing work plus plenty of time for resourcing, meditation, or even a walk outside in the beautiful Berkshire mountain air.

Cost Effective

Research shows that EMDR intensives over the course of a few days provide similar outcomes to months of weekly therapy. Research shows that EMDR Intensives can result in significant reduction of PTSD and Complex PTSD symptoms in up to 100% of participants (Bongaertz et al., 2017 and Mendez et al., 2017). An intensive is a significant upfront investment. That’s why I offer six months interest-free financing using Care Credit.

What To Expect During Your EMDR Intensive…

Your EMDR Therapy Intensive is designed to provide a deeply personalized and restorative healing experience. Here’s what you can expect:

Pre-Intensive Consultation

We’ll begin with a consultation to get to know one another and ensure your goals align with an EMDR intensive. Together, we’ll identify primary themes, events, or targets to focus on and determine the ideal length of your intensive to meet your unique needs.

Personalized Trauma Treatment Workbook

You’ll receive a customized workbook designed to help you work on your treatment goals before, during, and after the sessions. This resource allows for deeper reflection and supports long-term healing.

Customized Treatment Plan

A tailored treatment program will be created, identifying 1-3 specific targets for reprocessing based on your personal goals. This approach ensures your intensive is focused, effective, and aligned with your needs.

A Retreat-Like Experience

Your intensive will feel like a retreat, whether you choose to participate virtually from the comfort of your home or in Rachel’s private, peaceful therapy office in Great Barrington, MA. To further support your healing, expressive arts like movement, music, and art can be integrated, along with time outdoors between reprocessing work.

Evidence-Based EMDR Techniques

Each session, typically lasting 2–3 hours per day, will use evidence-based EMDR techniques to help you reprocess and heal from challenging memories in a safe and supportive environment.

Built-In Comfort and Care

Breaks and self-care practices are woven into the schedule to ensure you feel supported and at ease throughout the process.

Post-Intensive Follow-Up

Your intensive includes a follow-up session to reflect on the changes you’ve experienced and discuss strategies to sustain your healing. Rachel will also coordinate post-intensive care with your ongoing providers, such as your therapist, psychiatrist, or primary care provider, to ensure continuity of care.

This structured and compassionate approach offers a transformative path toward lasting relief and healing.

Frequently Asked Questions About

EMDR Therapy Intensives

  • EMDR intensives are appropriate for most issues treated with ongoing, weekly therapy. EMDR may not be appropriate for those in active addiction or with certain medical conditions. Contact Rachel if you have questions about if EMDR intensives are right for you.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a highly effective approach in treating trauma-related symptoms and facilitating healing. During EMDR therapy sessions, clients focus on traumatic memories or distressing thoughts while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, taps, or auditory tones. This dual attention process allows the brain to reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional intensity and facilitating adaptive resolution. EMDR therapy is evidence-based and widely used to address a range of trauma-related disorders, including PTSD.

  • The biggest difference is time! EMDR intensives allow us to take a deep dive into your healing. In a standard 50 minute EMDR session, by the time you catch up on your week, you may only have 20 minutes of reprocessing time. Intensives give us plenty of time to allow you to arrive, settle in, going deep into the reprocessing and then spend time finding a peaceful closing

  • Depending on your goals and desires, intensives may include meditation, movement, art-making, breathwork, time outdoors, and of course trauma re-processing. There will plenty of time to just talk too!

What Challenges Can EMDR Therapy Intensives Help You Overcome?

EMDR Intensives may be a good fit for you if you’re living with the following experiences:

  • PTSD, Childhood Trauma, Relational or Attachment Trauma, Complex Trauma

  • Survivors of Violence or Abuse: Domestic violence, sexual abuse, or sexual assault trauma

  • Anxiety: Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorders, or phobias

  • Religious or High-Control Group Trauma

  • Perinatal or Postpartum Experiences: Anxiety, depression, birth trauma, stillbirth, or TFMR (termination for medical reasons)

  • Single Event or Recent Trauma: Car accidents, fire, natural disaster, or medical trauma

  • Grief: Traumatic grief or the loss of a loved one
